Am not sure any giraffe is called Gregory. Scott Perry rated it liked it Aug 04, Christine rated it liked it Oct 12, Trish Sullivan rated it really liked it Jul 01, New-born giraffes stand at around 6 feet tall, making them taller than most adult humans. Most of them get around 10 minutes to two hours of sleep per day. Giraffes go to sleep standing up most of the time.

They are also able to give birth while standing up, meaning that these creatures rarely have an excuse to lie down! Within just 10 hours of their birth, baby giraffes can run with their families without struggling. The scientific name today has not changed — Camelopardalis.

The name was given to these creatures by Julius Caesar, who received a giraffe as a gift and was thrilled with it! After showing it off to the people of Rome, he ended up feeding it to the lions. Their tongues can be as long as 45cm, allowing them to get their lunch from very tall trees! Between their pregnancies, female giraffes only have a two-week window in which to get pregnant.

Adult giraffes only need to find water once a day. They can run up to speeds of 35 miles per hour, outrunning most horses. Their long legs mean that they can cover plenty of space in a short amount of time, making their average walking speed around 10 miles per hour.

The dance consists of women sitting down while men dance around them in a circle. When giraffes are seen rubbing their necks against one another, they are competing to see who is stronger. His name was Geoffrey the Giraffe, but he was first known as Dr.

Ever wondered what sound a giraffe makes? These animals often snort and hiss, but can also make very low sounds which are impossible for humans to hear. Giraffes are able to drink up to 10 gallons of water each day, and also get water from the plants they eat, including acacias.

Of all land mammals, the giraffe boasts the longest tail. Adult giraffes can have tails up to 8 feet long. When females need to go and hunt food, one of them will stay behind and babysit the young giraffes. This win-win situation for both creatures ensures that the birds find food and that the giraffes get rid of unwanted parasites.

Their mothers will usually be out hunting food. The tallest land animals in the world and the largest of Earth's grazing ungulates, giraffes Giraffa camelopardalis live in the savanna grasslands of sub-Sarahan Africa. Giraffes exhibit several characteristics developed through their evolution in a grassland environment in which scattered trees offer a food source most other species cannot utilize, water can be scarce and predators abound.

Giraffes' famously long necks allow them to browse leaves off the tops of grassland trees, helping them avoid food competition from other herbivores. A giraffe's neck can be up to 6 feet long. Their long necks also provide a height advantage for spotting predators, so other grassland prey species look to giraffes as sentinels for danger.

A number of other anatomical and physiological adaptations help make their long necks possible. For example, a large heart and lungs are necessary to pump blood to the brain and expel used air from the windpipe.

According to The Science Creative Quarterly, many researchers believe sexual competition might also contribute to the evolution of the giraffe's long neck, because male compete for mates through a form of neck wrestling.

A giraffe's tongue is well-adapted to acquiring leaves in the savanna. The giraffe's tongue is the strongest of any animal and is exceptionally long at 18 inches. Their tongues are also prehensile, allowing for accurate use. According to the San Diego Zoo, scientists believe the dark coloring of the giraffe's tongue helps protect it from the harsh savanna sun. Giraffes have a thick coating of glue-like saliva in their mouths. The saliva protects the animals from injuries from sticks and thorns, allowing them to consume grassland vegetation that is inedible to other species.

Acacia trees, a common grassland tree species, is one of the giraffe's favorite foods. Acacias are armored with spiky thorns, but strong prehensile tongues and protective saliva allow them to eat the tree's leaves. Giraffes acquire much of their water needs from food and from morning dew. They are also able to go for long periods without water and can gulp water quickly when needed. A giraffe can consume up to 10 gallons of water at one time. Being able to go without water is useful during the dry seasons on the savanna.

Drinking large amounts of water quickly helps limit the time giraffes are vulnerable to attack from their main predators: lions and crocodiles. The giraffe's patterned spots and light tan to dark brown coloring help camouflage the animal in the grassland environment. Although their large size and defensive kicking abilities protect them from most savanna predators, babies are at risk and require the extra protection their camouflage offers. He had only a blackish, bulgy nose, as big as a boot, that he could wriggle about from side to side; but he couldn't pick up things with it.

But there was one Elephant--a new Elephant--an Elephant's Child--who was full of 'satiable curtiosity, and that means he asked ever so many questions.

And he lived in Africa, and he filled all Africa with his 'satiable curtiosities. He asked his tall aunt, the Ostrich, why her tail-feathers grew just so, and his tall aunt the Ostrich spanked him with her hard, hard claw. He asked his tall uncle, the Giraffe, what made his skin spotty, and his tall uncle, the Giraffe, spanked him with his hard, hard hoof.

And still he was full of 'satiable curtiosity!

He asked his broad aunt, the Hippopotamus, why her eyes were red, and his broad aunt, the Hippopotamus, spanked him with her broad, broad hoof; and he asked his hairy uncle, the Baboon, why melons tasted just so, and his hairy uncle, the Baboon, spanked him with his hairy, hairy paw. He asked questions about everything that he saw, or heard, or felt, or smelt, or touched, and all his uncles and his aunts spanked him.

One fine morning in the middle of the Precession of the Equinoxes this 'satiable Elephant's Child asked a new fine question that he had never asked before.

He asked, 'What does the Crocodile have for dinner? By and by, when that was finished, he came upon Kolokolo Bird sitting in the middle of a wait-a-bit thorn-bush, and he said, 'My father has spanked me, and my mother has spanked me; all my aunts and uncles have spanked me for my 'satiable curtiosity; and still I want to know what the Crocodile has for dinner!

I am going to the great grey-green, greasy Limpopo River, all set about with fever-trees, to find out what the Crocodile has for dinner. Then he went away, a little warm, but not at all astonished, eating melons, and throwing the rind about, because he could not pick it up. He went from Graham's Town to Kimberley, and from Kimberley to Khama's Country, and from Khama's Country he went east by north, eating melons all the time, till at last he came to the banks of the great grey-green, greasy Limpopo River, all set about with fever-trees, precisely as Kolokolo Bird had said.

Now you must know and understand, O Best Beloved, that till that very week, and day, and hour, and minute, this 'satiable Elephant's Child had never seen a Crocodile, and did not know what one was like.

It was all his 'satiable curtiosity. Then the Elephant's Child grew all breathless, and panted, and kneeled down on the bank and said, 'You are the very person I have been looking for all these long days. Will you please tell me what you have for dinner? You are hurtig be! He is much surprised and astonished and hurt, and he is talking through his nose and saying, 'Led go!

All that black stuff is the banks of the great grey-green greasy Limpopo River but I am not allowed to paint these picturesand the bottly-tree with the twisty roots and the eight leaves is one of the fever-trees that grow there. Underneath the truly picture are shadows of African animals walking into an African ark. There are two lions, two ostriches, two oxen, two camels, two sheep, and two other things that look like rats, but I think they are rock-rabbits.

They don't mean anything. I put them in because I thought they looked pretty. They would look very fine if I were allowed to paint them. THIS is just a picture of the Elephant's Child going to pull bananas off a banana-tree after he had got his fine new long trunk.

I don't think it is a very nice picture; but I couldn't make it any better, because elephants and bananas are hard to draw. The streaky things behind the Elephant's Child mean squoggy marshy country somewhere in Africa.Sarah what a sweet little pattern. Your daughter's teacher will love it! I LOVE this.
