At North Oakland hackerspace, enthusiasts tinker with microcontrollers Juan Reyes on October 7, Taking on a hobby could be fun and a relaxing way to get away from the norm. Some people collect rare items, while others tend to stick to recreational activities. The North Oakland-based hackerspace hosted its first-ever Arduino Night on Wednesday, as a handful of attendees had a chance to tinker with microcontrollers. With the increasing digitization of just about everything, these small microcontrollers are found in everything from airbags in cars to dryers, stoves and digital cameras.

High performance microprocessors are used in powerful computers, smaller 16 and bit microcontrollers are installed in consumer products. According to Grand View Research, a United States based market research and consulting company, the global microcontroller market was estimated at 17, Shourt said he wants to install and wire the microcontroller to an LED screen that will sit above the rear sight to display what mode the dart blaster is in and another key feature. The shop includes a 3D printer, a textiles area and wood shop for members to use any time of the day.

And by any time, AMT means the shop is open 24 hours, seven days a week. Drew Dibble is listed as secretary. Arduino is also open source, which means the software can be freely used, changed, and shared or modified by anyone. Pickard said people have come to her in the past with the idea of incorporating LED light bulbs into their art pieces—the only problem is they need an Arduino microcontroller in order to shoot out the correct information to display the image.

From an artist standpoint, that is what I see implemented a lot. Art Community Culture Education Technology. Oakland North welcomes comments from our readers, but we ask users to keep all discussion civil and on-topic.

The marks from their heavy boots and equipment act as tangible reminders of the event and the sacrifice the workers were involved in during the months of cleanup. The Vietnam Veterans Memorial contains the names of 58, people killed or missing in the Vietnam War. It challenged what it means to grieve publicly. She also clearly challenged the kind of military triumphalism of a lot of war monuments, including the controversial World War II Memorial built on the National Mall two decades later.

The reaction by many government officials and veterans was that it was too somber, too reflective of loss and it was seemingly anti-war. It is these issues of forgetting and healing versus confronting and grieving that designers have to deal with. How much do we want to forget and how much do we recognize pasts that are really painful?

The concrete shafts are almost like gravestones. They range in height from 1 to 10 feet high and are closely packed, so inevitably you feel compressed into this dizzying space. It evokes visceral emotion.

From the anonymity of it — there are no inscribed names of the dead since this would be a nearly impossible task — and the endless repetition of the forms, you get a sense of the scale of the history that it is commemorating. Its open edges and central location in the middle of Berlin are very important: It invites participation by anyone and individuals can interpret and experience it as they may, meaning its message is not overly scripted.

You can just go there and have the experience you need to have. At the World Trade Center memorial you have to go through layers of security and stand on numerous lines since only so many can go in at once. In a sense, like memories, these offerings shift and change over time. The actual act of designing a memorial has to be open enough to adapt to different ways people interpret history or past events.

Because I think those change over time, too. AE: What are some of the political issues a designer has to navigate when creating something so publicly painful? AH: Inevitably, memorials trigger controversy, but this is what is exciting about them: They stimulate public debate and activate the public sphere. There may be conflict over the question of national collective identity, especially in the unique multicultural circumstance of the U.

The biggest challenge for designers generally is whose history and memory are represented and what gets forgotten. I think the Sandy Hook shooting is going to evolve into a conversation over memorialization. Like controversies over the Columbine shooting, do the aggressors or perpetrators get recognized in the memorial as sad consequences of our society? Will these or should these types of memorials confront issues of gun accessibility or gun violence?

Should memorials confront the historical or political context of why these events occurred or should they prioritize healing? Though the city of Berlin is sometimes criticized over making a tourist industry from the memorialization of the Holocaust, the palpability of the painful past preserved in the built fabric makes it a strong example of a place that is striving to recognize and confront its history.Numerous service learning and research opportunities are integrated into classes taught by our nationally-recognized faculty.

An Institute for Fiscal Studies reportusing several years of evidence gathered from education and taxation data, showed the higher pay for graduates in a small group of subjects remained even after adjusting for student background and school type. They are the inconvenient kernel of truth underlying critiques of mass higher education. The authors cautioned that some of the high returns offered by certain degrees or institutions may be the result of other factors that are difficult to measure.

Richard Adams Education editor. Published on Thu 7 Jun Updated for the Arduino 1. This book brings together in one place all the information you need to get something done with Arduino. It will save you from endless web searches and digging through translations of datasheets or notes in project-based texts to find the information that corresponds to your own particular setup and question.

Reference features include pinout diagrams, a discussion of the AVR microcontrollers used with Arduino boards, a look under the hood at the firmware and run-time libraries that make the Arduino unique, and extensive coverage of the various shields and add-on sensors that can be used with an Arduino.

One chapter is devoted to creating a new shield from scratch. The book wraps up with detailed descriptions of three different projects: a programmable signal generator, a "smart" thermostat, and a programmable launch sequencer for model rockets. Each project highlights one or more topics that can be applied to other applications.

The Microprocessor: A Systems Approach emphasizes the programming and interfacing of the Using a systematic, step-by-step approach, the text covers various aspects ofincluding C and Assembly language programming and interfacing. Throughout each chapter, a wealth of examples and sample programs clarify the concepts, offering an opportunity to learn by doing. Review questions at the end of each section help reinforce the main points covered in the chapter.

Each projectwill have a practical approach, with in-depth descriptions and program flow-charts with block diagrams, circuit diagrams, a full program listing and a follow up on testing and further development.

This is no ordinary circuit board. Arduino allows anyone, whether you're an artist, designer, programmer or hobbyist, to learn about and play with electronics. Through this book you learn how to build a variety of circuits that can sense or control things in the real world. Maybe you'll prototype your own product or create a piece of interactive artwork? This book equips you with everything you'll need to build your own Arduino project, but what you make is up to you!

If you're ready to bring your ideas into the real world or are curious about the possibilities, this book is for you. Learn by doing? Easy does it? Solder on! Only ever used a breadboard in the kitchen? Don't know your soldering iron from a curling iron?Documentation collected for this purpose helps teachers stay close to students' learning and interests by enabling them to revisit a learning experience.

It leads teachers to compare what they thought would happen to what really went on and informs decisions about where to go next. Sharing this kind of documentation with others reduces the subjectivity of a single person's analysis and interpretation and can deepen understanding.

This form of documentation is the least shaped or the most "raw" of the three types described here.

Reviewing this type of documentation often influences the amount of time a group spends on a topic and the level of student involvement in shaping the learning experience. Since September, I've been working with a group of nine infants and toddlers through the Cambridge Even Start program.

I, along with two other teachers, care for the children in a classroom space at the Peabody School while their mothers are attending English class next door.

As children have phased into the group throughout the year, I've been fascinated by each child's process of separating from their mothers many for the first time and of becoming part of the group. I first began to document this process with Harold, a month-old who, outside of brief intervals of being cared for by his father, had never been without his mother. Through taking notes and photographs, I began to notice the role of the other children in helping Harold overcome the hurdle of functioning when apart from his mother.

Since then, I've tried to document segments of the process for other children as they've joined our group. For some the transition has seemed smooth, while for others the journey has been painful.

In each case, however, the group has played an important role. I've included below, pieces of the process for two of the children. I hope to add stories of two recent members later. Two first and fourth grade teachers bring their students together across schools and grades to engage in a Freedom Curriculum they created based on the Civil Rights Movement.

In general, the students are bright and interesting, but don't see themselves as being particularly smart or successful in school. For many of them, the lack of motivation to do work outside of class is a major impediment. The material presented here is taken from the final five weeks of a semester long course. The inquiry questions, though, come mainly from the final two weeks of class when some things, notably the literary analysis of Lord of the Flies, turned out particularly well.

In an attempt to unravel the components of this success, I have begun to sift through student comments and reflections as well as my own gut feelings and the observations of my partner, Joan, for clues.

There's real evidence of flowering in the work of Jen's grade nine English Language Arts students. We are wondering how - and the degree to which - we made that flowering happen, especially because in the future, we'd love to grow other gardens filled with even more robust, variegated, and beautiful flowers.
